About MAZIDO International

MAZIDO (Management of Arid Zones Initiatives and Development Option) is a local NGO based in Voi, Taita Taveta County with its main office at Mwangura Complex adjacent to Mwangea Boys. Our mission is to empower the community to utilize natural resources sustainably through advocacy, education, and promotion of climate-smart technologies. Currently, MAZIDO is implementing STAWI Mashinani, a five-year USAID-funded activity.

 

Job Summary

MAZIDO seeks an experienced driver responsible for driving the vehicle in compliance with MAZIDO’s Travel policy and Kenyan Law. The driver will also ensure the safety of passengers on board. He/she will also be responsible for taking care of the assigned vehicle(s) in all aspects including ascertaining that the vehicle(s) is in excellent condition before each trip, checking the validity of vehicle insurance, checking the security situation in the areas of operation before each trip and filling defect or repair requests as appropriate. Under the supervision of the Finance Officer, the Driver will be based in Voi, Kenya with frequent travel to the field locations.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accountable for all parts and accessories fitted in assigned vehicles. 
  • Prepare vehicle performance, maintenance, and repair reports, and submit as required.
  • Ensure the implementation of vehicle maintenance plans. 
  • Plan to meet anticipated travel requirements and make all arrangements ensuring efficient services (fueling, pre-travel checks, required travel documents, required equipment, spare parts, and tools, vehicle cleaning, persons traveling for packing instructions and timings). 
  • Ensure copies of daily mileage logs, pen and clipboard are readily available in all assigned vehicles. 
  • Promptly collect filled-in daily mileage logs to avoid loss or defacing. 
  • On a monthly basis, compile a summary of the mileage log and submit it to the Finance Officer for review.
  • Routinely check all assigned vehicle licenses, insurance, and other statutory compliance documents and promptly advice when renewals are due. 
  • Transport MAZIDO staff and visitors as instructed, observing local traffic and road safety laws and all MAZIDO vehicle policies to ensure the safety of passengers and luggage, and quality and courteous services. Report immediately any accidents and/or route changes due to security, bad weather, road conditions. Maintain and submit accurate records for all trips. 
  • Ensure assigned vehicles are secured when not in use.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

  • At least “O” level certificate, with a minimum pass of DIV III, or Grade C in Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
  • Certification in Defensive Driving is a plus.
  • Knowledge and experience in vehicle maintenance and repairs. A certificate in mechanical repairs is an added advantage. 
  • Knowledge of the Taita Taveta County terrain will be an added advantage.
  • Valid accident-free driving license Class B, C, E with a minimum of 4 years of long-distance and off-road driving experience. 
  • A valid certificate of Good Conduct is mandatory.
  • Certificate in first aid is an added advantage.

ToR For Business Skills Training for Local Youth and Women Farmers on Produce Marketing and Sale

  1. Summary of TOR

MAZIDO is looking for a facilitator to conduct business skills training for local youth and women farmers on produce marketing and sale. The trainer will design a two-day training program, deliver it, and submit reports on the training’s effectiveness. This training  is intended to improve their economic prospects, increase their financial independence, and contribute to the local economy. This is in line with “Objective 3: Improve management, efficiency, and equitable access to water used for productive purposes”

2.0 Project Description

The overall purpose of STAWI Mashinani (meaning, “STAWI at the Grassroots Level” in Swahili), will strengthen long-term resilience and capacity of county-level institutions and communities in Kenya to better manage their water resources for domestic and productive use in an efficient, equitable and sustainable manner. The program goal: strengthening long term resilience and driving localization for better management of water resources. This will contribute to the STAWI goal of improving water security in areas of recurrent crisis by strengthening water service, delivery, and management systems across nine arid and semi-arid counties in Northern and Eastern Kenya (namely Garissa, Isiolo, Kitui, Makueni, Marsabit, Samburu, Taita Taveta, Turkana, and Wajir). This will be achieved by working across the four interconnected Strategic Objectives (SOs) of the STAWI Addendum:

Objective 1: Improve governance of water resources and services

Objective 2: Increase sustainability of water service delivery. 

Objective 3: Improve management, efficiency, and equitable access to water used for productive purposes. 

Objective 4: Improve collaboration and learning across stakeholders and strengthen the capacity of county governments.

3.0. Background

Millennium Water Alliance ( The MWA ) is a global alliance of leading humanitarian, research, and business organizations. MWA’s global and national hubs work with our members to scale and influence sustained water and sanitation services and resilience globally. MWA is a consortium of implementing organizations that work directly in the world’s poorest regions, and it is a team player with others in the United States, striving to increase public support for US leadership in effective international development. MWA is the lead entity of the STAWI Mashinani Activity.

MAZIDO International (Management of Arid Zones Initiatives and Development Option International) was registered in 1995. It envisions a prosperous community that uses its natural resources sustainably, whereas its mission is to empower the community to utilize natural resources productively through advocacy, education and promotion of climate smart technologies.

MAZIDO International (MAZIDO) is the local implementing partner for the Sustainable Transformational and Accessible Water Interventions (STAWI) Mashinani Activity in Taita Taveta County.

  1. Objective

The primary objective of this assignment is to conduct a three day training on business skills for women and youth farmers in produce marketing and sales. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Identify different marketing channels for their produce.
  • Develop strategies for pricing their products competitively.
  • Utilize effective communication and negotiation techniques in sales.
  • Understand basic post-harvest handling practices to minimize spoilage/losses and enhance product quality.
  • Develop a basic marketing plan for their farm business.
  1. Scope of Work

The trainer will:

  • Develop a comprehensive training curriculum aligned with the learning outcomes outlined above.
  • Deliver a three-day interactive workshop using a variety of training methodologies including, lectures, discussions, case studies, practical exercises).
  • Provide participants with relevant training materials, including handouts, presentations, and templates.
  • Facilitate group discussions and answer questions from participants.
  • Evaluate participants’ understanding of the concepts covered through pre- and post-training assessments.
  • Submit a workshop report to MAZIDO summarizing key findings, challenges encountered (if any), and recommendations for future training initiatives.
  1. Methodology

The trainer is expected to use a mix both of qualitative and quantitative methods, including but not limited to: 

  • Conduct a pre-training assessment to gauge the participants’ existing knowledge of produce marketing and sales.
  • Lectures: Introduce key concepts and principles of produce marketing and sales.
  • Discussions: Facilitate group discussions to encourage participants to share experiences, ask questions, and learn from each other.
  • Case Studies: Analyze real-world scenarios relevant to the local context to apply theoretical concepts to practical situations.
  • Role-playing: Conduct role-playing exercises to allow participants to practice negotiation and communication skills in sales situations.
  • Group Activities: Facilitate group activities to encourage teamwork, problem-solving, and collaborative marketing plan development.
  • Utilize engaging visual aids like presentations, pictures, and infographics to enhance understanding and retention.
  • Administer a post-training assessment to evaluate the effectiveness of the workshop in achieving the learning outcomes.

  • Recommendations for future training initiatives, including potential improvements and follow-up activities.
  1. Qualifications and Expertise
  • Advanced degree in Agricultural economics, Agribusiness, economics, social sciences, or related fields.
  • Proven experience in conducting smallholder farmer assessments and evaluations (rural communities in Kenya).
  • Strong understanding of gender and youth issues in business and entrepreneurship.
  • Excellent analytical, writing, communication facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Familiarity with the local context and language is an added advantage.

This is a three (3) day training. The reports should be ready within 7 days upon signing of the contract.

NOTE: MAZIDO will provide stationery, facilitate conference and food. Trainer will only be required to develop a training programme, curriculum, any training tool that will be used as a sample during the training period and the training report.

Agroecology Officer

Summary:

This position plays a crucial role in the STAWI Mashinani program, a USAID-funded initiative focused on enhancing water resource management for domestic and productive use. The Agroecology Officer will be responsible for managing and implementing programs that promote sustainable water use for agriculture, livestock rearing, and domestic purposes, while fostering collaboration with local communities and stakeholders.

Responsibilities:

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Provide expert knowledge and guidance on water for productive use (WfPU) activities, integrating sustainable farming practices into the STAWI Mashinani program.
    • Collaborate with the STAWI Mashinani team to develop, pilot, and implement agroecology and sustainable food system solutions that enhance agricultural production.
  • Capacity Building:
    • Conduct or facilitate training workshops for stakeholders, including Water Resource User Associations (WRUAs), farmers and community members, on topics like efficient water use, climate-smart water technologies, and agroecological practices.
  • Business Development and Partnerships:
    • Work with the WASH Manager to develop and implement technical assistance plans for WfPU businesses, such as irrigation schemes, focusing on improving operation and maintenance (O&M) and efficiency
    • Engage with private sector water businesses to explore opportunities for delivering water services for productive purposes.
    • Collaborate with financial institutions like the Agricultural Finance Corporation to identify and expand funding opportunities for water supply investments, enabling enterprises and cooperatives to improve water recharge and storage.
  • Community Engagement and Project Management:
    • Support community groups in designing and implementing well-managed water harvesting and multi-use water systems to increase water availability for productive uses.
    • Prepare regular progress reports and provide timely updates to key stakeholders, ensuring adherence to donor guidelines and deadlines.
    • Apply best practices in project management, ensuring project deliverables are met and leading the technical aspects of the project.
    • Filling in for other project staff as and when need arises.
    • Any other additional work as assigned by the project lead.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural/water science, agronomy, agribusiness, water resource management, environmental science, or a related field. Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Minimum of five years of professional experience in planning, programming, and implementing WfPU and agriculture-focused programs.
  • Experience working on donor-funded projects, preferably with USAID.
  • Deep understanding of Taita Taveta County, particularly in the context of WASH.
  • Proven experience in delivering high-quality reports for development partners and donors.
  • Strong oral and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, attention to detail, organizational, team management, and community mobilization skills.
  • Proficiency in IT applications.

Finance Officer

Location: Taita Taveta County, Kenya

Summary:

This position plays a vital role in supporting the financial management of various projects, including the STAWI Mashinani program funded by USAID. The Finance Officer will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including budget preparation and monitoring, financial reporting, compliance, and managing financial systems.

Responsibilities:

  • Budget Management:
    • Actively participate in the preparation and monitoring of project budgets.
    • Gain comprehensive knowledge of the STAWI Mashinani Field Operations Manual (FOM) and identify areas requiring policy or procedure adjustments.
    • Understand and adhere to USAID rules and regulations for compliant project implementation.
  • Financial Reporting:
    • Develop and maintain reports on financial management activities (monthly and quarterly).
    • Ensure the balance of project asset/inventory reports with the general ledger/field accounting system before submission to USAID.
    • Identify and comply with all contractual financial reporting requirements in a timely and accurate manner.
    • Ensure proper documentation of tax reporting procedures for timely submission.
    • Review and submit monthly reconciliation reports, including those related to foreign exchange.
    • Prepare annual budgets and quarterly forecasts against budget statements.
    • Conduct regular financial analyses to assess project performance and identify areas for improvement or potential risks.
  • Audit and Compliance:
    • Coordinate with external auditors and ensure timely and accurate provision of required financial documents and information for annual and special audits.
    • Ensure adherence to Kenyan law standards and established internal controls for project financial management, aligning with MAZIDO policies and USAID regulations.
  • General Accounting and Financial Management:
    • Conduct regular cash flow analyses to maintain accurate bank balances and ensure fund availability.
    • Process invoices, advances, reimbursements, checks, and wire transfers accurately and timely.
    • Ensure timely deposit of cash receipts.
    • Manage petty cash according to established procedures.
    • Safeguard bank checks, cash receipts, and maintain file management systems for financial documents.
    • Maintain files related to subawards, procurement, and subcontractors.
    • Manage the schedule of financial activities for timely preparation of budget reports.
    • Minimize non-billable expenses.
    • Track, record, and report taxes paid to USAID as per ADS guidelines.
  • Travel Advances & Reimbursements:
    • Follow established procedures to ensure accurate and timely processing of travel advances and reimbursements for staff and partners.
    • Regularly review outstanding travel advances and aging reports for accuracy and resolve discrepancies promptly.
  • Payroll:
    • Manage the payroll for accurate and timely processing of all transactions, adhering to employment agreements.
    • Ensure staff compliance with the timekeeping policy and maintain accurate records of staff attendance and working hours.
  • Financial & Procurement Systems:
    • Update financial information in the designated financial system.

 

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or equivalent, or CPA (K). Master’s degree is a plus.
  • Proficiency in financial management software and tools (ERP and accounting systems).
  • Experience managing donor (preferably USAID) funds is a significant advantage.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in finance and accounting, financial analysis, and reporting to management and stakeholders.
  • Solid experience in audit coordination, reporting, budget development/analysis, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, payroll taxes, and accounting.
  • Strong oral and written communication, analytical, interpersonal, attention to detail, organizational, and team management skills.
  • Familiarity with USAID programming models is a plus.
  • IT proficiency is essential.
