Amboseli, Kenya — March 6, 2024. A new generation of leadership is emerging in the Amboseli ecosystem, thanks to funding from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) in partnership with the Amboseli Ecosystem Trust (AET). The recently completed project focused on empowering women and youth to take a leadership role in natural resource governance, aiming to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Amboseli Landscape.

"By collaborating with AET, we aimed to fortify the capacity of local communities for effective leadership within the conservancies and ranches," MAZIDO said. The project involved a review of existing leadership structures, exploring opportunities for improvement and a smooth transition to the next generation, with extensive engagement of key stakeholders — including local government officials and prominent women leaders — to ensure diverse perspectives were incorporated. The consultancy is part of the broader "Sustainable Management of Amboseli and Tsavo Landscape" project implemented by IFAW in partnership with AET.
