[Project Terminated by USAID] Taita Taveta County: MAZIDO Awarded Local Implementor of STAWI Mashinani

Voi, Kenya — February 6, 2024. MAZIDO has been awarded as the local implementor of STAWI Mashinani by the Millennium Water Alliance (MWA), a 5-year program geared towards strengthening the governance of water resources through the empowerment of Water Resource User Associations (WRUAs) and Water Management Committees (WMCs). The project also aims to make water for productive use available, including irrigation, achieved through collaboration with stakeholders including the county government of Taita Taveta.

The program has four key areas of intervention: enhancing water governance by strengthening local WRUAs and WMCs, ensuring water availability, and resolving water-related conflicts; improving water service delivery by making rural water services more efficient and reliable; promoting productive water use by helping farmers and pastoralists access water for irrigation and livestock, and improving water and market access for women and youth in agriculture; and improving collaboration and learning between county governments, local organizations, and communities to plan and manage water resources together.

By 2028 the project intended to reach at least 10,000 people with improved basic access to water for drinking and multiple use through rehabilitation of community water projects in partnership with the county government of Taita Taveta, operationalize 2 Water Resource User Associations under a Sub Catchment Management Plan (SCAMP), mentor 5 women in water service delivery and entrepreneurship, and increase revenue from community-managed water points by at least 10%.
