About the Project
We’re excited to share some great news: MAZIDO International has been selected to lead a new project aimed at improving the welfare of donkeys and the communities that rely on them in Taita Taveta County, located in coastal Kenya.
This important project, supported by Brooke East Africa, focuses on making life better for both donkeys and their owners. Donkeys are essential to many families, helping with transport, farming, daily chores, and generating income. Yet, they often suffer due to poor care, lack of veterinary support, and threats from predators.
What the Project Will Do
Working closely with donkey owners, veterinary officers, and local authorities, the project will:
- Training donkey owners on care, feeding, and access to veterinary services
- Training on humane handling and welfare practices
- Training on safe shelters to protect donkeys from predators
- And advocating for better animal welfare laws at the county level
🐾 Guided by the Five Domains of Animal Welfare
This project takes a holistic approach to donkey care using the Five Domains model:
- Nutrition – Ensuring access to clean water and nutritious feed
- Environment – Providing safe, secure, and comfortable shelter
- Health – Promoting timely treatment, vaccinations, and disease prevention
- Behaviour – Allowing donkeys to express natural behaviors freely
- Mental State – Reducing pain, stress, and fear for better well-being
Stay tuned! We’ll be sharing stories and updates as the project unfolds.
